Port of Turku supporting business-oriented Maritime@TSE research platform
The maritime sector plays a significant role in the Finnish economy, serving as a major export market and facilitator of economic activities. Globally, the business environment in the maritime sector is characterized by recurrent uncertainties. To ensure operational continuity and competitiveness, the maritime sector requires information as a basis for decision-making. In the coming years, significant changes will be brought about by geopolitical shifts, the adoption of alternative fuels, and automation.
The Turku School of Economics is increasing its investment in systematic and substantial business-oriented research with the aim of supporting the maritime sector. Since the fall, the School of Economics has strengthened the operations and resourcing of the Maritime@TSE research platform. Within this platform, there are 5 professors and research directors, along with approximately 25 doctoral students and other staff.
The research platform receives support from industry players, and joining the community that supports the platform are not only Port of Turku Ltd but also Cargotec Corporation, Fintraffic Vessel Traffic Services Ltd, Kongsberg Maritime Finland Ltd and Port of Naantali Ltd. The community is permanently open to new members.
The basic funding from the university, donations allocated to the School of Economics, and additional funding for projects collectively elevate the School of Economics’ research investments related to the maritime sector to approximately two million euros annually in the coming years.
