Turku aims to be carbon neutral by 2029, when the city celebrates its 800th anniversary. The City of Turku has received recognition for its climate work from the European Commission, particularly for its collaboration with local businesses and organizations. Regional cooperation is carried out in the Turku Climate Team, a network targeted at businesses and communities in the area. Its purpose is to make climate change mitigation visible, impactful, and communal.

The Climate Changemaker campaign, which started in early February, puts a face to Turku’s climate work and highlights everyday climate efforts in the city. Climate Changemakers work in companies and organizations committed to helping Turku achieve carbon neutrality by 2029.

One of the Climate Changemakers is an electrician of the Port of Turku, Antti Tamminen, who has helped the Port reduce emissions through their professional expertise. Among other things, they have been involved in building charging infrastructure for the port’s electric vehicles: a truck, six vans, and four cars, as well as for the personal electric vehicles of employees and customers. They have also replaced old lighting in port areas and halls with energy-efficient LEDs and smart control systems.

In general, systematic environmental work has been carried out in the Port of Turku for a long time. Our goal is to minimize the environmental impacts of our operations on land, sea, and air. Our environmental program aligns with the city’s climate plan, with the goal of a carbon-neutral Turku. We joined the city’s Climate Team in June 2023.

At the port, the transition towards carbon neutrality is being made by investing in renewable energy use and electrifying operations. For example, we have switched to using renewable electricity and replaced our vehicle fleet with electric vehicles within the limits offered by the market, including both vans and other work machines.
