We have collaborated for a year to establish a fossil-free maritime corridor with Viking Line and the Ports of Stockholm. Over the past year, we have created a strong foundation for the project. The fossil-free maritime corridor development project provides us with the opportunity to promote sustainable development and reduce the environmental impact of maritime transport.

We organized the Green Corridor seminar on February 6th, the project’s anniversary, which brought together project participants and a large number of maritime transport experts and decision-makers. The seminar discussed the results, experiences, challenges, and opportunities of establishing a green maritime corridor between Stockholm and Turku. Several speeches were heard during the day from the perspectives of the city, ports, shipping companies, and political decision-making.

Turku Port CEO Erik Söderholm, who opened the event, emphasized the importance of cooperation in developing green transport corridors.

Turku Mayor Minna Arve also highlighted the importance of cooperation in combating climate change. Ville Niinistö, Chairman of the Board of Turku Port and Member of the European Parliament, presented the European Parliament’s perspective on the development of green transport corridors.

Magdalena Bosson, CEO of Stockholm Ports, and Markku Alahäme, Technical Director of Turku Port, discussed the progress of the ports’ fossil-free goals.

Eero Hokkanen, advisor to the Ministry of Transport, spoke about the significance of green transport corridors and the role of corporate responsibility in the changing Baltic Sea region. He emphasized the effects of international cooperation, EU regulation, and hybrid threats on sustainable maritime transport.

In addition to the aforementioned, thoughts on greener maritime transport were also heard from the perspectives of the energy sector, security of supply, and university research institutes.

After the seminar filled with diverse speeches, guests gathered for a more informal discussion and networking session, during which participants eagerly exchanged greetings and thoughts on the greener future of maritime transport.
