News in the Ferry Terminal Turku project – March 2025

Terminal piling will be completed during March

The construction of the new joint passenger terminal was initiated in January. The work began with the relocation of the utility pipelines and cables under the terminal construction site and the piling and foundation work for the terminal building. The piling will be finished by mid-March, after which the ground stabilising and foundation work will start towards the end of March. The construction of the terminal frame will begin in July.

The main façade materials of the passenger terminal, based on the winning plan of the international architectural competition, ORIGAMI, are glass and aluminium, Across its three-storeys, the building covers over 10,000 square metres, and its complex façades are very demanding.  The project aims for three stars in the environmental classification of Rakennustieto, which indicates a good level of environmental quality.

The estimated duration of the terminal building construction is 24 months. The main contractor of the joint passenger terminal, designed by PES-Architects Ltd., is Skanska Talonrakennus Oy.

Over 300 steel piles for the foundations of the S1 pier

The work to construct the new pier S1 began in November 2024. Piling work began in December and marine piling work in February 2025. The piling work will continue until the end of May. More than 300 massive 40–45-metre steel piles will be driven into the ground to form the foundation of the pier.

The old pier has been dismantled, and the reinforcement work of the port yard and anchor slab has begun with concrete piling. The construction of the pier itself will use 12,000 cubic metres of concrete.

Pier S1 will be nearly completed by the end of this year, with the finishing work done during summer 2026. The main contractor is Terramare Oy and the pier designer Profund Oy, who are also responsible for planning during construction.

First construction phase of the field area is scheduled to start in the summer

The planning of the field area is on-going, and an invitation to tender for the field area is pending. The first construction phase of the field area should begin in the summer of 2025. During the first phase, the construction will focus on the west side of the field area so that it will be ready when the new Pier S1 is taken into use. The eastern, northern and southern parts of the field area will be constructed at a later phase. Their construction work will be tentatively realised in 2026–2027.
